PLANNING AHEAD TO MAXIMIZE YOUR SUCCESS
by PHILLIP RUCKS
I can’t stress enough how im- portant it is to plan ahead. Give us a year to grow your trees. We’ll
we can use . . . just to make micro-cuttings. While your trees are being grown in the nursery, plan to visit a couple of times to see how they are being graded. Stop by right before budding and about four months after budding. You’re making too big an investment to overlook quality con- trol. Make sure you’re paying for the qual- ity you deserve. Nursery workers should
be pulling out the undesirables.
At Phillip Rucks Citrus Nursery in
Frostproof, we cull the smaller and weaker plants at least four times during produc-
tion to ensure our customers get the stron- gest trees. As the battle against greening continues, you want the strongest trees in the field producing your fruit.
As it is in life, relationships are impor- tant. Growers should cultivate business re- lationships with nursery staff so they will have a better chance of having their expec- tations met.
To maximize your chances for suc- cess, be flexible. Believe in what you’re do- ing and be willing to make changes. You can’t do business the way your daddy and
granddaddy did. There are better citrus materials available and we need to use them. Newer rootstocks are more adapt- able. Resist the temptation to be pessimis- tic about your challenges. It will only breed negativism and impede progress. There’s good reason to be optimistic about im- proved production strategies and new and better tree varieties.
When mistakes happen, remember we’re all learning and growing. Hang in there. We’re going to work through this— together.
work with an estimate. You don’t need to have an exact count. We do need to know what varieties you want. We used to have an abundance of seed for trees that were in demand. But with these new rootsock vari- eties, we don’t have trees producing seeds. We need six months to grow a mother tree
