Trent's Quick Bite

It’s the Fourth of July and time to be outside getting a bit burned. . .on the grill and on your skin.
Here’s a run down on what you’ll pay for ribs.
Publix: $1.99.
Winn-Dixie: $1.79, three slabs per package, limit of one package.
Neighbor’s Meat Market, Lake Alfred: $1.79.
Mac’s Meats, Winter Haven $1.79 BY THE CASE only. That’s three slabs per package and three packages to the case. One package costs $1.99 per pound.
Green’s Market, Winter Haven: $1.89 for small ribs, three racks per package.
Harvest Meat Market, Lakeland and Auburndale: $1.98 per pound for medium ribs, 2 and 3 slabs per package.

Happy $hopping.

Crispers had been a sore spot off and on for a long time.
We stopped in for lunch the other day and were pleasantly surprised.
The tuna dinner costs a penny under $12 and considering the size of the tuna, it’s worth it when it’s done right.
Yesterday, after a failed try, it was done to perfection . . .red and moist inside, a little crusty and spicy outside.
A manager had it cooked the way she likes it. I do, too
My wife’s Spring Flatbread Salad (hold the gorgonzola, double up on the mozzarella)
was equallly great.
Keep in mind that if you want the tuna less than well-done you have to make the point before the fish goes into the oven.
Thanks guys, we’ll be back.

A trip to Wally World led  to  a couple of interesting discoveries.

You can get sugar-free imitation honey and no-calorie “peanut spread.”

The Sugar-Free Imitation Honey is from HoneyTree in Onsted, Missouri. The company makes sugar-free products especially for folks who can’t (or shouldn’t) have sugar but want a similar taste and mouth feel. The same outfit makes regular honey and sugar products, too. Ingredients include maltilol syrup, natural and artificial flavor, Acesulfame K, malic acid.

It gets good reviews online. www.honeytreehoney.com.

Then there is Walden Farms “Calorie Free Whipped Peanut Spread.”

The ingredients include: triple filtered purified water, vegetable fiber, sea salt, corn starch, xanthan gum (thickener made from vegetables), natural fresh roasted peanut flavor, natural peanut extract, and a few other bits and pieces including sucralose and colors.

The company makes no-calorie syrups, dips for fruit, fruit spreads (like jams), whipped peanut spread (including cinnamon-raisin and chocolate), mayo, veggie and chip dips, BBQ sauces, salad dressings and pasta sauces.

They are not something you would eat to get nutrition, but they are better than nothing for folks who need them. www.waldenfarms.com.

Got some Thomas’ English muffins on BOGo the other day . . .light multi-grain and corn. The first ingredient in the multi grain is wheat flour. Other flours come after salt. The corn flavor says “Made with real corn.” Right after sugar comes toasted corn germ. Next after something called “datem” is corn flour. There are some natural and artificial flavors in there, too.
But they do taste good . . .nice and corny and sweet. The sweet could be from sugar and sucralose.
When we’re in Winter Haven (almost all the time) we stop at Richard’s Fine Coffees at the library a lot. We’re there so often that we’re on a first name basis with the owner and call him Dick.
In the rest of the world we stop at Starbucks. There are some American-made drinkers there, not just the ceramic ones, but plastic, too.For all the Tree-hugging hype from the company, the store at Lakeside Village does not recycle anything, even the cardboard sleeves for the cups. Eagle Ridge store reuses the sleeves.

Taco Bell has a bunch of new stuff in the works.
Thanks to huge sales of the Dorito taco, the company has been inspired to come out with higher end foods. Everything will stay under 5 bucks.
The new selections, inspired by renown chef and TV personality Lorena Garcia, should hit the stores July 5.
Look for many more high end tastes, new ingredients and choices.
