FFA members from across the county gathered in a field on Monday, March 4th to demonstrate their knowledge of soils in the annual Polk FFA Land Judging and Homesite Evaluation contest. The Land Judging event requires students to understand the makeup of soils and how they affect land usage. This event requires students to get a little dirty while thinking analytically. The Polk contest was sponsored by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

A “new deal” has recently been established in United States agriculture and though it is not like FDR’s New Deal, it has also been created to economically boost United States farmers and businesses.

The United States and country of Panama have introduced a new agreement, the U.S.-Panama Trade Promotion Agreement (or Panama TPA), which will allow easier exportation of U.S. goods into Panama’s markets.

Antonio Mancini left Italy for America in 1904.

It’s a long and tasty story, but the family’s roasted red Florida peppers and more were on display for food professionals to see (and buy) at the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Show in Orlando recently.

The family firm, centered in Zolfo Springs since 1940, packs peppers from Florida and they go all around the country. You can buy them in jars in supermarkets including Publix.

 

Down the aisle and around the corner was Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company. The firm is five generations of Indian River citrus growers and the fresh-squeezed juice started to flow in 1990.

Summer is officially over and we all have to get back to our daily grind – our day jobs – although the work for the garden is hardly finished.  As human beings we live for moments where we feel that our work is not in vain.
