Hydroponic Controlled Growing Systems for Locally Grown Products “The Hands-on Approach to Learning”

This short course is being offered as part of the UF Small Farms Academy, the mission of which is, “Helping small farm producers Prosper through Education, Networking, and Adaptive Research.”

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Agricultural Emergency Preparedness is collaborating with several training partners to offer Department of Homeland Security (DHS) certified courses in Florida. All courses are open to all United States Citizens, and are free of charge through DHS grant funding.

Highlights the Role of School Breakfast Programs in Building a Foundation for American Competiveness

WASHINGTON, March 7, 2011 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today marked National School Breakfast Week (March 7-12) by emphasizing the administration's commitment to provide schoolchildren with healthy, well-balanced meals to prepare them for a productive school day. Working with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! initiative, USDA is enhancing programs that will help to raise a healthier generation of students who will enter the classroom ready to concentrate, engage and learn.

In 2005 and 2006 the Florida Division of Forestry in cooperation with the University of Florida IFAS program developed a certification program for Florida Pile Burners. The first class was held in Bartow at the Bob Crawford Building in October of 2006. The second session was held at the same location in November of 2006. In 2009 the Florida Department of Agriculture amended the open burning rules and regulations to include the pile burner certification program. Florida Administrative Code (FAC) 5I-2 outlines the steps necessary to become certified and also what is necessary to keep that certification. The rule states that a pile burner maintains their certification if they can show that they have used their certified burn number at least 5 times in the previous five years.
