HARWOOD, Md – Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan announced the USDA will be investing in farm to school programs nationwide to help eligible schools improve the health and wellbeing of their students and connect with local agricultural producers. Merrigan joined students at Southern High School to announce the new program that will promote opportunities for nutrition and agriculture education while providing new economic opportunities for food producers of all kinds and communities nationwide. Students at the school displayed and highlighted their farm to school efforts with a tour of the school's greenhouse.
WASHINGTON, March 26, 2012 – Today 200 4-H members from across the country came to the nation's capital to make their voice heard as part of the 2012 National 4-H Conference, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady of the United States, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack addressed the delegates during the morning general session.
Agriculture industry volunteers from around the state are invited to read to elementary students on Agriculture Literacy Day scheduled for Tuesday May 1 this year. Florida Agriculture in the Classroom and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services have developed a new book for the event this year called Healthy Florida Farms. It's the fourth in a series of Florida Agriculture Literacy Day books, and educates students about the nutritional benefits of Florida commodities.
