FCA President Jim Strickland Spoke Before Congress This Morning

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

This morning at 9:30 a.m., the President of the Florida Cattlemen’s Association, Jim Strickland, addressed the House Agriculture Committee’s Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Subcommittee about the state of the U.S. Beef industry.

In this testimony, Strickland testified “the challenges cattle producers face regarding federal laws and regulations, including proposed environmental regulations, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Grain, Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration’s proposed livestock marketing rule and more.”  To view Strickland’s full testimony, click here.

It’s also important to note that the House of Representatives is set to vote on on H.R. 910 tomorrow: a legislation to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.  This legislation is supported by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and they strongly urge all those who care about the beef industry to contact their representative urging to vote in support of this bill.  To read more about H.R. 910, click here.

I just received my reminder for Agri-Fest

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

I’m so excited for the 23rd Annual Polk County Agri-Fest next week!  I’ll be heading out there next Tuesday to help Polk County’s 4th graders learn about our diverse agriculture industry.  Just in case you haven’t heard, the last week to get involved is February 22nd – 25th and the 28th.
Over 6,000 students attend annually, and this is a great opportunity for them to learn about agriculture in a hands-on, interactive way.
Some of the exhibits included for students at Agri-Fest will be citrus, beef cattle, phosphate, beekeeping, blueberries, horticulture, forestry, and water conservation.
If you haven’t volunteered already, then I hope you’ll make some time to get out there and lend a helping hand. I’m sure volunteers are always in need, and this is sure to be a rewarding opportunity for both the volunteer and the student!
For more information, you should contact the Polk County Farm Bureau office at 863-533-0561 ext 1 or e-mail info@pcfb.org.

We’ve updated our agriphotos

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

We’ve updated our agriphotos section so now you can enjoy 28 galleries and 1 new category! These galleries could be from an event we covered, like the PCFB Ag Tour under “events” or a place related to Florida agriculture, like the Mulberry Farmers’ Market under “Farmers’ Markets.”

Some of my favorite galleries are the Fall Fuel Up Show under “events” and the October Cover Gallery under “Cover Galleries.”  The photos in these galleries are really interesting, not just for their topic, but for their use of color and truly capturing special moments in ag.

Make sure you visit them all, because Florida agriculture has plenty to offer and see.

If you like what you see in these galleries, then you should subscribe to Central Florida AgNews Magazine.  We publish photos from new events and places in the Ag Community section of each issue.  So look for it in the next edition of CFAN.

NCBA's reaction to the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is “extremely disappointed” with the house for passing the FDA Food Modernization Act.  It seems that the act will exempt some small producers and processors from the legislation and this does not bode well for the association or beef producers around the country.

To read the official statement from the NCBA on the passage of this legislation, click here.  To read more about the FDA Food Modernization Act, click here.

Watch the December Cover Story Videos

Friday, December 17th, 2010

The exclusive interviews with Marty Tanner, President of the Florida Aquaculture Association and Allen Register, owner of Gatorama are now viewable on the web, www.CentralFloridaAgNews.com.  Notice the massive reptile standing behind us during the interview?  Before the tapes were rolling, Allen Register, reassured us that in the cold weather the alligator was too busy soaking up the sun to take notice of anyone standing right next to him.  He proved his point by casually walking up to the reptile and lifting his tail up and down before we built up enough nerve to come any closer!

It was an incredible experience, and if you have a chance to head down to Gatorama any time soon, tell the gators I said hi!  Enjoy the videos, and keep watching CFAN AgTV.

To read more about alligator farming and the many facets of the aquaculture industry, make sure you get a copy of the December edition of Central Florida AgNews Magazine at any one of our pick-up locations.
